| Salamanca is a distinguished city that has played an important cultural role through out the history of Spain and has been declared a ‘World Heritage Site’ city, as well as European Cultural Capital 2002. What stands out the most about this enchanting city is the mixture of periods and styles visible: - Prehistoric remains - city walls, inscriptions, - A bridge from the Great Roman Empire - Visigoth gateways - Representative buildings of the Moorish period - Great Romanic constructions of the re-settlers - The Ecclesiastical School which culminated in 1218 into the internationally recognised University of Salamanca. - Gothic buildings such as the new Cathedral - The artistic and religious vitality of the Rennaisance represented in Salamanca by a unique style: the Plateresque; the Barroque style -The Clerecía and the Main Square; the Neoclassical and Modernist movements define a city which, nowadays, is a mixture of cultures which flow around the monumental Main Square. |
