The region is full of unique attractions, which enables the organisation of exciting hiking trips and excursions: Chequered Land – the Historic Monument of the European Cultural Heritage In the 18th and 19th century, the domineering element of the rural landscape in the region of Pomerania was half-timbered architecture. Poles were fixed to squares of wooden constructions of the buildings, wound around with straw-rope and coated with clay. The surface of squares was painted white with lime, while the wooden beams were smeared with tar. These constructions have been preserved until today in many provinces of the valley of Słupia. The village of Swołowo is known as the capital of “the chequered land” – there are numerous 19th-century farms and craftsman’s workshops of half-timbered construction. World Biosphere Reserve of the Słowiński National Park The Słowiński National Park is one of the most peculiar places in Europe, mainly for its fauna and flora. There are moving sand dunes resembling the desert landscape. This is the only place where dunes descend to the lake and to the forest at the same time. Air currents make the sand move inland by 10 – 20 metres a year, covering everything on its way. For its uniqueness and natural and landscape diversity, in 1977, the Słowiński National Park was added to the list of the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserves. Open-air Village Museum in Kluki Founded in 1962, the open-air village museum called “Zagroda Słowińska” presents the tradition and culture typical for people living in fishing villages situated by the lakes of this region. From the top of the “holy mountain” of Rowokół (115 metres asl), you can admire the beautiful panorama of the area. Route along the Old Water Power Stations In the valley of Słupia, there are five water power stations: Skarszów Dolny, Krzynia, Strzegomino, Gałąźnia Mała and Struga. Technical infrastructure of the power station, storage tanks, channels, dams and weirs perfectly match the landscape and make this place one of the most beautiful spots of the Natural Landscape Park of the Słupia Valley. Tourists visiting the place can observe how these genuine and old machines and devices, carefully preserved and maintained, reliably work until today. Museum of Central Pomerania in Słupsk The Museum of Central Pomerania is located in the Castle of the Pomeranian Princes. It has the largest and the most splendid collection of paintings by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz in the world. Currently, the collection of the artist’s works consists of over 200 paintings, mostly portraits in pastels on paper. |
