After World War II Gliwice became an important academic and economic centre. The Silesian Technical University was founded here. Most of the teaching staff came from the Lvov Polytechnic and Lvov University. Design offices and other institutions came into existence and the chemical industry began to dominate the business areas. Gliwice became the capital of the chemicals industry, with the Central Management Office of the Chemicals Industry at the forefront. Later, the State Cancer Institute, the Silesian Operetta House and a museum were opened. In 1992 a new Roman Catholic diocese was created with a cathedral in Gliwice. In 1998 the Opel Polska plant was opened - one of the biggest foreign investments in Poland. | |
