A hotel has stood on the site of The Kings Arms and Royal Hotel since 1358, and former guests include Peter the Great Tsar of Russia, who famously left without paying his bill, and King Henry VIII, whom ordered the former inn to be built in celebration of the arrival of the navy in Portsmouth.
