Pevensey Bay makes an ideal place to stay if you plan to explore the area, as it is a short distance from Eastbourne and has excellent road links to the rest of the county. Pevensey village is 4 miles from the sea, but at one time the sea went as far back as Hailsham, 7 miles inland. Pevensey is part of the Cinque Ports, a group of towns that pledeged to supply men and ships to fight against invasion. The area was renowned for smuggling. Nearby attractions include: Pevensey Castle (one mile) - standing on the site of the old Roman fort where William the Conqueror camped before the Battle of Hastings, Pevensey Castle was constructed between the 12th and 15th century and continued to be used up to the 20th century. |
